Attlee, Clement

Attlee, Clement
(1883–1967)
Clement Attlee was elected as a Labour MP in 1922, became party leader in 1935, Deputy Prime Minister in the war coalition in 1942 and (following a landslide Labour victory) Prime Minister in 1945. He presided over the 1945–51 governments that introduced the Welfare State and embarked upon a programme of widespread nationalisation.
A quiet, unassuming figure, Attlee was nonetheless an effective premier noted for his brevity and directness (sometimes terseness) in speech, his generally sound judgement, his unflappability and his ability to chair his Cabinet. In his own words, in his early career ‘few thought he was even a starter’, yet he is now widely regarded as one of the best Prime Ministers. In Professor Pimlott’s words, he remains ‘top deity in the modern Labour Party’s pantheon’.
